Is it Witch House? Goth Trap? Trap Wave?
Last week Toro Y Moi dropped a new album by sharing a picture on Instagram with the caption: 'Samamantha' out 8-28-15, and including a download link in his bio. The release comes as a surprise, but the captivating production is something Toro, a.k.a. Chaz Bundick, has been hinting at for quite some time. Samantha is full of trap-inspired beats and hazy cyber-esque moods with songs featuring rappers Rome Fortune and Kool A.D.
Chaz has been labeled as a forefather of chill-wave and has displayed his fascination with slowed funk on several of his albums. When he created a playlist for Fader last year (In anticipation of his new Les Sins album, Michael), he fully hinted at what type of rap music he was feeling, and it had us wondering if that's what he was going to give us next.
Michael ended up offering a variation of house, hip-hop, and funk elements, but still wasn't the niche of slowed rap-ready beats we figured Chaz was secretly brewing.
Fortunately that niche has been fully realized on Samantha. We've wanted to see Chaz fully flex his muscles as a producer for other artists, particularly rappers, for a long time, and this surprise mixtape is better than anything we could've imagined.
